A four-step ladder towards becoming HR Manager

Human Resource is a strategic business concept that offers an excellent career option. However, the modern Human Resources Management requires unique profiles of candidates with strong business acumen, financial management skills, general management experience and the previous experience with the change and project management. However, following four steps describe the process of becoming a successful HR Manager.
STEP 1: Studies
Nowadays, the HR Professionals have to be close to the business leaders. They have to be able to interpret the balance sheet, have to build a basic Cost and Benefits analysis. They need to be educated in the financial management basics. They have to build some hard skills, and they can add the HR soft skills layer later. The young graduates with solid business management skills are the most valuable job candidates for Human Resources.
Additionally, the graduate should be educated in Psychology and Sociology. It helps to understand how the group behaves and how important emotions and human behavior in the business are. A great HR Professional can manage a difficult situation when the internal client needs help.
Last, basic HR courses are a pro. They are not required, but they contribute to gain the basic knowledge of the key HR processes and Human Resources operate in the organization. Also that, MBA is not required to enter Human Resources and it does not add any value to most job applicants.
STEP 2: First Jobs
Finance Department is a great career start for most graduates. Finance is not just about the accounting, it is about the financial management of the organization and securing the cash flow. The early career in Financial Planning and Analysis is always a great advantage for the HR Manager. The HR Manager has to understand to financial management and has to argue in discussions.
The back office is a great place for the development of the people management skills. Each graduate should spend some time in the Call Center or any other back office function. Managing the daily performance is an excellent management and leadership skill. Being able to manage shifts, operational issues and staying calm in stressful situations is always good for the HR Manager.
STEP 3: First touch with Human Resources
Most employees do not enter Human Resources directly. They start as the functional coordinators of the cross-functional HR Project. They just attend team meeting and make things happen. It is a good moment to be noticed by an experienced HR Manager or the HR Project Manager. It is always good to be visible and recognized in HR as an HR angel.
It is a good moment to apply for the specialized HR role. It is good to enter HR as a team leader who deals with HR processes, procedures, and issues. As a person who can present an independent, realistic and honest view of HR services, it is good to make proposals how you can improve HR processes and services. The role of the HR Specialist is the right one.
STEP 4: Promotion in Human Resources
When in Human Resources you have to compete with your colleagues to be promoted. Almost everyone wants to become the HR Manager because it is the most recognized job position for the HR Professional. Being a senior manager or the HR Business Partner is the true career objective.
You have to develop your interpersonal skills. Most HR Managers spent a day negotiating with business leaders, managers and employees. They investigate and compare different proposals. They always look for the internal equity and fairness. They have to use all skills and competencies gained from the previous three steps. However, this is the optimum way how to become the HR Manager.
